Transporting perishable goods requires a level of precision and care that is crucial to maintaining quality and safety.

Recently, our logistics department undertook a critical transport for one of our esteemed clients—a fresh fish distributor supplying top restaurants. This project exemplified our commitment to excellence in logistics and our expertise in handling perishable items. Discover how we make it happen in our latest blog!

The journey began with salmon from multiple countries being flown into Miami, where it was consolidated into one truck for its journey to Canada. On a bustling Saturday morning, our truck departed from Miami at 3 AM, loaded with 45,000lbs of fresh salmon that originated from six different overseas shipments.

Each of these overseas shipments required separate customs clearance, making this a complex logistical operation from the get go.

By 10 AM on Sunday, as scheduled, the salmon had arrived in Etobicoke, Ontario, perfectly chilled at -1°C (30°F). Here’s how we made it happen:

State-of-the-Art Equipment - The carrier utilized a 53-foot tandem reefer trailer, which was essential for maintaining ideal conditions for our client's delicate cargo, especially as summer temperatures soared. The refrigerated unit ensured that the salmon remained at the optimal temperature throughout the journey.

Dedicated Drivers -  A team of two experienced drivers worked in 12-hour shifts,to ensure the truck remained in constant motion at all times. This dedication ensured that the delivery was completed within a tight 30-hour window, minimizing the time the fish spent in transit.

Complex Customs Coordination - Since the shipment involved six customs clearances coordinated with four separate customs brokers, all operating under one umbrella organization, this intricate process required meticulous planning, especially after regular business hours, to prevent delays at the border.

One of the most significant challenges we faced was managing the complexities of after-hours customs coordination. However, our team’s dedication and commitment to real-time problem-solving allowed us to overcome every hurdle. By maintaining clear communication with customs brokers and ensuring all necessary documentation was prepared in advance, we facilitated a seamless clearance through customs.
