Blind Spots: What You Need to Know

At ANDY, safety and the secure transportation of your freight are our top priorities.

Our security department offers customized, ongoing training to our drivers, incorporating specializedmodules, assessments, and comprehensive equipment inspections. A critical focus of this training is blind spot awareness. We educate our drivers on the fact that many car drivers are unaware of a truck's blind spots.

Our drivers are trained to consistently monitor these areas, proactively anticipate potential risks, and ensure the safety and integrity of your shipment from start to finish.

While we take extensive measures to ensure our drivers drive safely, we also need other drivers to be aware of a truck's blind spots.

Here are some tips on how to share the road with heavy-duty ground transportation trucks:

  • Maintain about five seconds of distance between your vehicle and a heavy-duty truck when traveling at speeds over 60 km/h. This ensures ample reaction time for both you and the truck driver.

  • When passing a heavy-duty truck, provide sufficient space before merging back. A good rule is one car length for every 16 km/h of speed.

  • Most people don't know all of a truck's blind spots. See the visual above to learn a truck's blind spots. Once familiar with a truck's blind spots, pass at a steady, safe speed to minimize time in these areas.

Remember: If you can see the driver's face in their side mirror, they can see you too.

  • Distraction-free driving is crucial, especially around heavy-duty trucks. Keep your attention on the road at all times.

  • Always pass trucks on the left. This helps truck drivers anticipate your movements and ensures safer lane changes.

  • Whether merging, passing, or following, giving trucks extra space is the safest approach for all road users.
